22-year-old Maria (Julie Andrews) is a nun who grew up in a Salzburg monastery. However, her lively and nature-loving character always makes her trouble in the monastery. Dean Abis (Peggy Wood) in the nun's house feels that her lively character is not suitable for the life of a nun. 

So, when she received a request from Colonel von Trapp (Christopher Plummer)'s family to seek care, she decided to let Maria go and let her explore the true purpose of life.

幕后制作：

《音乐之声》改编自百老汇同名音乐剧，根据玛利亚·冯·特拉普的著作《冯特拉普家歌者的故事》（《The Story of the Trapp Family Singers by Maria von Trapp》）改编而成。该片的拍摄地点也在原著中提到的萨尔兹堡、奥地利和巴伐利亚等地。

该片制片方最初想找执导过《宾虚》的好莱坞导演威廉·惠勒（William Wyler）来执导，当时他已经现场勘景并把原剧本做了一些改动。他心目中的《音乐之声》完全是另一个样子，威廉·惠勒甚至想要拍摄一些战争场面来渲染气氛。

而同名音乐剧在百老汇上演的两年之前，派拉蒙向冯·恰皮·辛格买下了故事的版权，并打算让奥黛丽·赫本出演玛丽亚。而奥黛丽·赫本表示拒绝出演，派拉蒙方面随即抛弃该电影计划。
